City of Kuopio Updates Educational Video Management with Icareus Video Cloud

The City of Kuopio’s Education and Culture Division has updated its KuopioTV video service and migrated educational video content to Icareus Video Cloud. The aim was to modernize video management, support Moodle integrations, and create a stronger foundation for developing the use of video in education.

At a glance:

  • KuopioTV video content was migrated to a new platform together with its metadata and access rights.
  • The solution supports the management, discovery, and use of lesson recordings in education.
  • Moodle, MPASS, and other integrations connect the video service with Kuopio’s wider digital learning environment.
  • The project included migration, implementation, training, and additional developments tailored to Kuopio’s needs.

Klassikka has used lesson recordings for years

Kuopio Classical Upper Secondary School, known locally as Klassikka, has been recording lessons for several years, particularly in mathematics and natural sciences.

Teachers have typically recorded lessons using OBS Studio and uploaded the completed videos to the service for students to watch. The same workflow continues on the new platform. The recordings allow students to review lessons at their own pace and return to key topics later.

"Lesson recordings give students the opportunity to review teaching and return to key topics later. The introduction of the new service has got off to a good start, and cooperation in solving practical needs has been smooth.”
Lari Härkönen
Lecturer at Klassikka and responsible for the service

With the new video service in place, Kuopio can evaluate expanding the use of recordings to new subjects, other upper secondary schools, and potentially basic education. A centralized video service provides a common technical foundation for this development.

Large video library migrated smoothly to a new environment

Over the years, Kuopio’s previous KuopioTV service had accumulated several terabytes of lesson recordings, educational video materials, and other video content.

During the migration, thousands of videos – approximately five terabytes of selected content – were transferred from the Ubicast platform to Icareus Video Cloud using APIs in around one week. Essential metadata, categories, and access rights were retained during the migration.

Icareus delivered the migration as a turnkey service. This reduced the workload for Kuopio’s own staff during the transition and supported the implementation of the new platform.

As part of the deployment, Icareus implemented MPASS authentication and developed new features based on Kuopio’s needs to make everyday video management and publishing easier.

“Cooperation with Icareus has been effective, agile, and solution-oriented. Needs identified during the implementation have been addressed quickly, and solutions have been developed together in good cooperation.”
Ilkka Kukkonen
IT Manager, City of Kuopio

MPASS authentication makes access easier for teachers and students

MPASS authentication allows teachers to log in to Icareus Video Cloud administration and Kuopio’s video publishing site using their familiar education-sector credentials. Students can similarly use their MPASS credentials to access videos intended for them.

The authentication solution supports Kuopio’s existing user management practices and makes the new video service a natural part of the city’s wider digital learning environment.

Bringing Moodle and video into the same learning environment

SnellmanEDU manages the Moodle learning environments used by the City of Kuopio’s Education and Culture Division and also coordinates Icareus Video Cloud accounts and integration for the city. This allows video to be developed as part of a broader digital learning environment.

“At SnellmanEDU, it is important to us that digital services support everyday teaching as smoothly as possible. Thanks to the Moodle integration, recordings can become part of teaching without unnecessary switching between systems, while we can support Kuopio’s educational needs as a unified whole. We have a long-standing partnership with Icareus in developing recording services, and together we have been able to diversify content distribution and simplify administration. Smooth cooperation is an important part of developing the service.”
Timo Lemmetty
ICT Specialist, SnellmanEDU

The Icareus Video Cloud Moodle LTI integration enables videos to be used directly within Moodle courses, reducing the need to move between separate systems.

With both the Moodle environment and video service administered by the same partner, user support, access rights, and further service development can also be coordinated as a single entity. This reduces unnecessary steps and makes it easier to incorporate video into everyday teaching.

Keeping a large video library easy to manage

Kuopio’s educational video service contains thousands of videos that can be grouped, for example, by school, subject, course, or academic year. To support the presentation of large content libraries, new hierarchical menu options were added to Icareus Video Cloud video pages.

The new menu options allow categories and subcategories to be displayed in a clear hierarchy and reordered as needed. This makes it possible to adapt the structure as content volumes and usage needs evolve, supporting the long-term development of the service.

School live streams can also be managed on the same platform

In addition to lesson recordings, Kuopio schools produce live broadcasts of events such as spring and Christmas celebrations. Icareus Video Cloud enables both recordings and live streams to be managed on the same platform.

Development continues through collaboration

Icareus Video Cloud provides a modern, scalable cloud environment for recording, managing, publishing, and streaming video across different devices. Its accessibility features support WCAG 2.1 AA requirements, while the platform provides tools for data privacy and secure video communications.

The update supports the preservation of educational materials accumulated over many years while enabling Kuopio to further develop the use of video in education.

During the collaboration, developments tailored to Kuopio’s needs were implemented in the service. Further development will continue to be evaluated based on the evolving needs of education.
