How can you benefit from accessibility? And how can achieving accessibility be made easy for you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13c685d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"13c685d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><p>Considering what we do here at Icareus, the focus of this blog post probably won\u2019t come as a surprise.\u00a0First, I will quickly and briefly explain what the web accessibility directive adopted by the EU is about in general, then I will explain a little about its meaning specifically in relation to the accessibility of videos.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c0b6c3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2c0b6c3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e312ab7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e312ab7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What's it all about?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05d26d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"05d26d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A truly accessible service is accessible to everyone, as easily as possible.\u00a0A truly accessible, barrier-free world treats everyone equitably.\u00a0In other words, accessibility is about taking into account human diversity when designing things.\u00a0Different needs and conditions aren\u2019t obstacles to living a pleasant, safe, and functional life \u2013 but the lack of equitable access provided to people with those needs and conditions can be.<\/p><p>The epidemic has led to changes in many ways, and one of the things in flux is the ever faster and more comprehensive transition of services to the online environment. This means that website accessibility has become an increasingly more important feature for the smooth functioning of society, and its importance will only grow as the population gets used to this new normal.<\/p><p>That is why it is very fortunate that the Web Accessibility Directive \u2013 also simply known as the Directive \u2013 came into force in the EU a few years earlier. The Directive requires authorities, public law institutions, and some organisations and companies to have websites and other online material conform to the WCAG standard.<\/p><p>WCAG , i.e.\u00a0<strong>Web Content Accessibility Guidelines<\/strong>, are guidelines for the accessibility of online content. The international World Wide Web consortium, or W3C, is responsible for drafting and developing WCAG. The first version of the guidelines was published in as early as 1999 \u2013 in Finland and other EU countries, the latest version (2.1) approved in June 2018, is currently required. The goal of the guidelines is to ensure that all people, regardless of their needs, can use online services: that online content reaches the minimum level of accessibility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e92739e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e92739e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council\u00a0(2016\/2102) on the accessibility of websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies entered into force on 22 December 2016.<\/p><p>The goal of the Web Accessibility Directive is to:<\/p><ul><li>promote everyone\u2019s opportunity to function fully in digital society<\/li><li>create Europe-wide uniform minimum level requirements for the accessibility of public sector websites and mobile applications<\/li><li>improve the quality of digital services<\/li><li>improve the European Union\u2019s implementation of accessibility in the internal market<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2016\/2102\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">EUR-Lex<\/a><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d96442b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d96442b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The WCAG guidelines are divided into three different levels of compliance:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boia.org\/blog\/whats-the-difference-between-wcag-level-a-level-aa-and-level-aaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A, AA, and AAA level criteria<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0An online service that meets AAA level criteria ensures accessibility for the widest possible group of people, i.e. it is subject to the most stringent requirements.<\/p><p>The law on the provision of digital services requires compliance with the A and AA level criteria of the latest version of the WCAG guidelines, i.e. the WCAG 2.1 guidelines.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ce880a elementor-position-inline-start elementor-view-default elementor-mobile-position-block-start elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-box\" data-id=\"5ce880a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-box.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon-box-wrapper\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon-box-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t<span  class=\"elementor-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" id=\"Layer_2\" viewBox=\"0 0 242 242\"><defs><style>      .st0 {        fill: url(#linear-gradient);      }      .st1 {        fill: #fff;      }    <\/style><linearGradient id=\"linear-gradient\" x1=\"52.8\" y1=\"192.2\" x2=\"147.9\" y2=\"71.1\" gradientUnits=\"userSpaceOnUse\"><stop offset=\"0\" stop-color=\"#7ebacc\"><\/stop><stop offset=\"1\" stop-color=\"#0a7aad\"><\/stop><\/linearGradient><\/defs><g id=\"Layer_1-2\"><circle class=\"st1\" cx=\"121\" cy=\"121\" r=\"121\"><\/circle><path class=\"st0\" d=\"M192.6,87.1l-104.1-38.1c-2.9-1.1-5.8-1.6-8.6-1.6-14.7,0-27.2,13.4-24.5,29.2l19.1,109.2c2.2,12.8,13.2,20.7,24.6,20.7s11.1-1.8,15.9-5.8l85.1-71.2c14.7-12.3,10.6-35.9-7.4-42.5ZM102.7,182.9c-.8.7-1.6,1-2.5,1s-3.5,0-4.1-3.4l-18.4-105.5c0-.5-.3-1.9.8-3.3.8-1,2-1.6,3.1-1.6s1,0,1.5.3l36.5,13.4c2.3.8,3.9,2.8,4.4,5.2l11,62.5c.4,2.4-.5,4.8-2.3,6.4l-29.9,25ZM184.9,114.2l-30.8,25.8c-.3.3-.8,0-.9-.3l-8.1-45.7c0-.4.3-.7.7-.6l37.8,13.8c1.5.5,2.4,1.6,2.6,3.1.3,1.5-.2,2.8-1.4,3.9Z\"><\/path><\/g><\/svg>\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon-box-content\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-icon-box-description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIcareus video portals, pages and video players comply with WCAG 2.1. criteria up to AA level.\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37b7e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"37b7e35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Video requirements<\/h2><p><strong>Media content affected by the Accessibility Directive:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Video with sound<\/li><li>Video with no sound<\/li><li>Audio recording without video (e.g. podcast recording)<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Videos improve content accessibility for many users. They are a useful way to internalise information, especially for people with reading or learning difficulties. So videos are already a useful accessibility tool in themselves, and it is only natural that by making videos more and more accessible, their usefulness increases even more.<\/p><p>The Accessibility Directive only applies to recordings, not live broadcasts.<strong>\u00a0Recordings must be made accessible no later than 14 days after the first broadcast<\/strong>, but sooner is always better. Captioning must also be done when the video is e.g. from a PowerPoint presentation, unless the performer follows his slides (or other text directly connected to the video) perfectly, word for word. In practice, therefore, the video must always be captioned.<\/p><p>Recordings uploaded to YouTube, etc. video\/social platforms must also be accessible.\u00a0This leads to its own problems, because the goals of such sites rarely match your own goals.\u00a0They want traffic, likes, and comments.\u00a0Social media platforms aim to keep the user on the site, but not necessarily watching\u00a0<em>your<\/em>\u00a0videos.<\/p><p>Advanced organisations have already moved their content away from advertising-funded social media services because they are not brand-safe environments for reaching \u00a0customers. In addition, the Digital Services Act also requires that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/europe-fit-digital-age\/digital-services-act-ensuring-safe-and-accountable-online-environment_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">all videos containing relevant information for customers must also be offered on the public organisation\u2019s own website or mobile application.\u00a0<\/a>However, it is up to the organisation to decide which videos meet this criterion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef99d61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ef99d61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What is accessibility made of?<\/h2><p>The accessibility of an online service must be considered as a whole: all parts must be accessible so that the whole could also be considered such.\u00a0Technical accessibility, ease of use, and comprehensibility are key features in terms of designing and implementing an accessible online service. It\u2019s good to keep them in mind also when thinking about the accessibility of video recordings and players.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b0b2bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-shortcode\" data-id=\"2b0b2bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"shortcode.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-shortcode\">\n<table id=\"tablepress-2\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-2\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><\/td><th class=\"column-2\">What is it?<\/th><th class=\"column-3\">Examples<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Technical accessibility<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The service is coded flawlessly and in compliance with standards, and the service works well with different end devices and assistive technologies, such as voice control and screen reader programs. The user can also customise the appearance of the content according to their own needs.<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">The video player works well on both computers and mobile devices, at least on the most common browsers. In addition to the mouse, the player can be used with a keyboard and voice control, and all the elements essential for using the player can be read with a screen reader. The user can adapt the appearance of the player according to their needs \u2013 e.g. increase the size of the text \u2013 without negatively affecting its usability.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Ease of use<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The service is easy to understand and use.<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">The layout of the video player is logical and easy to understand. The necessary functions, such as the play and exit buttons, can be found easily.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Comprehensibility<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The content of the service is easy to understand and absorb.<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">The content of the recording is clear, both visually and linguistically. An audio description and a plain text version are available for the video. The captions are easy to read. The player\u2019s buttons have names that clearly describe their functions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-2 from cache --><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee21202 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee21202\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let\u2019s use Youtube as our practical example again.\u00a0Youtube is a fairly good site in terms of\u00a0<strong>technical\u00a0accessibility<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 for example, it can be used with a keyboard and it scales responsively \u2013 but the large amount of irrelevant content and intrusive ads can make using it a more confusing experience than necessary.\u00a0This makes it less\u00a0accessible\u00a0in terms of\u00a0<strong>ease of use<\/strong>, at least in terms of clear content.<\/p><p>All three are essential things to consider when designing a video player and other online content, but in terms of the accessibility of the actual video content,\u00a0<strong>comprehensibility<\/strong>\u00a0is the most essential. The comprehensibility of the video recording can be improved in many ways, e.g. in the planning and production phase by making sure that the video expresses its information as clearly as possible, and afterwards with captions and\/or audio descriptions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7b03c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7b03c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Captions<\/h2><p>Captions (Text Alternatives, level A), are probably the first accessibility tool that comes to mind for many. They\u2019re widely used and useful for all kinds of people, not just those with impaired hearing \u2013 for example people learning a language or people who otherwise find hearing comprehension challenging benefit from captions. They are also useful in situations where the viewer cannot or perhaps should not listen to the sound of the video for one reason or another.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e7f9fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e7f9fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li>In Finland, there are approximately 800,000 people with hearing impairments<\/li>\n \t<li>One in five 70-year-olds and more than one in three 80-year-olds have a hearing impairment that makes conversation between people difficult<\/li>\n \t<li>At the end of 2021, 458,000 non-native speakers, i.e. people whose mother tongue is something other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami, lived in Finland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46cb744 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46cb744\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to speech, captions should cover the other essential sounds of the video \u2013 for example, background music, howling sirens, knocking on the door or applause must be mentioned in the captions if they are essential elements for the message of the video.\u00a0The captions must also tell who is speaking if there are several people in the video and the identity of the speaker is not clear from the picture.<\/p><p>Captions can be done with two techniques \u2013\u00a0<strong>open captions<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>closed captions<\/strong>. When using open captions, the text is burned into the image and is always visible. Closed captions can be turned on or off by the user as desired. Accessibility requirements do not determine which option must be used, but if the choice is free, you should prefer closed captions.
